Division Command Post moves

The Division Command Post was moved from Casablanca to the Casino in Fedala, a large, drafty wooden structure whose western windows overlooked the beaches on which the original landings had been made.  The nearby Miramar Hotel, from which the German Armistice Commission had fled on the first morning, was taken over for staff quarters.

Nov 25, 1942 – Wednesday

Well I didn’t go to bed right away last night, instead we made a little coffee over our fire before going to bed.  this morning we fixed a tripod over our fire.  we are getting things fixed up pretty good now but it is going to be rugged.  There are big lizards and every kind of a bug or insect you can think of around here.  The sun doesn’t come up until 8:30 or 9:am so we get to sleep a little late.  We just messed around and fixed a few guns.  At night we played the Victrola.

Nov 24, 1942 – Tuesday

We were up bright and early in fact very early as we were moving today to a new place.  We worked around all morning until about noon before they came back after us to move our things.  I hope we have a nice place.  Now here we are out in the middle of know where.  It seems brings back memories of Ft. Lewis as we are bivouacked in the middle of a pine tree forest.  we are in pup tents now and we have just finished putting it up.  It is too dark to write now as I will go to bed.

Nov 23, 1942 – Monday

Today was just about the same as every other day since I have been here.  We cleaned up the supply room in the morning and in the afternoon I went swimming for awhile.  When I got back i ate chow, played a little football and then tried to settle down and write some letters.  I then played a little cards and went to bed.

Nov 22, 1942 – Sunday

Today was another beautiful day.  Red Kesterson and I walked over to the air port.  It is about 3 mile one way so we had quite a hike before it was through.  I made me a foot locker to day to put my loose clothes in.  After dinner we went swimming and boy did we ever have fun.  The waves were about ten feet high and you could really go sometimes when they would hit you.  I guess I will listen to the Victrola and write some letters.  It will soon be ten anyway.

Nov 21, 1942 – Saturday

It sure was a pretty day today and tonight it is just as pretty.  It is a full moon tonight.  Boy how I would love to be back in the states and be out ridding and listening to the radio.  We are playing records now so it brings back memories.  Not much doing today.  We had a rifle inspection and I had to get a shortage  report in.  I played some catch just before chow and after chow we played football.  I came in and took a sponge bath or a whores bath as we call it.  It will soon be time for me to crawl into my knap sack and go to bed.  I have my mosquito net fixed up now so the mosquitoes stay away.  I had some champagne tonight.  It didn’t taste bad.  Well good night.

Letter Home November 21, 1942

Dear Mother & Dad,
Here goes a little new scribbling and I do mean scribbling. There’s not much going on here. Everything is quiet. I have been down to the ocean a few times. A couple of times we went fishing but we just can’t catch anything. We can see fish a foot long swim right by our hooks. The natives sure can catch them though. It surely is beautiful here. It will cloud up and rain one minute and the sun will be shinning the next. I like it fine over here and so far you couldn’t ask for a better place to be. Right now you couldn’t even tell that there was a war going on. I have been playing catch every evening. The days go fast here as it is still dark at 7:45AM and the sun comes up about 8:30AM. The meals aren’t bad, and if they are no one seem to complain. We have a Victrola and a short wave radio here. Some nights we listen to the Germans put out some propaganda and you should hear it. You would laugh your self sick. They say that there are a lot of people in the US out of work and also say that we are losing the war. They say that US is greedy. We have a great time listening to the fellow talk. He is an English man speaking from Germany. Well Mom & dad, good by and tell every one hello for me. You will have to have Gee transcribe these letters to “Snook”. Tell Eddie Hearts mother where I am so she can write Eddie. I lost his address. Good by again and I’ll be thinking of you both.
Love your son “Chick”

Nov 20, 1942 – Friday

Today we are to have an inspection and we will probably have to give some of our clothes to the fellow that lost all of theirs in the sinking of the ships.  I forgot to tell that the other night the Germans sank another ship.   Also another big convoy of ships came in with men and supplies.  One of the fellows that was in the wreck died this morning.  He was married and his wife was going to have a baby.  I spent the afternoon making out reports on the articles of the two dead men.  One was the only man we lost in action.  One of our men is still missing.  Guess I will go to bed.  We have a portable radio and Victrola here and we have been listing to short play made up on recording.  one was Fred McMurry and Barbara Stanwick  which is “Balls of Fire”  Boy the radio sure brings back memories of home.  We also can get programs on short wave at different times during the day.  We are six hour difference than the time back home.

Nov 19, 1942 – Thursday

the days sure go by fast.  One reason is because it still dawn at 7AM o f a morning and sun goes down about 5.   (I just dropped my pen right on the point and bent it so it doesn’t write so hot.  It sure makes me mad)  Just about the same thing happened today as yesterday.  Four of the fellows turned over in a Jeep when on patrol and things of three of them are in the hospital in bad shape.  They have gave them a couple of them blood transfusions.  I sure hope they come out of it.  It ‘s getting late so I guess i will go to bed.  We can write mail home but we can’t say all we want to.

Nov 18, 1942 – Wednesday

It rained most of the night last night and was a little cloudy today.  We and to issue out a few things in the supply room and then I cleaned the place up.  After dinner Red Kesterson & I went fishing.  We did it on the illegal side but we still didn’t get any fish.  The serf was to strong and we couldn’t tell whether there were any fish in the water or not.  We had prima cord and was going to blast them out.  We tried it a couple of times but there wasn’t any fish around.  It sure is pretty to see the it waves come in over the reefs.  Guess we will go up and get a little wine tonight.
