Combat engagements in North Africa

During an interview, Chick discusses the combat engagements in North Africa and who the enemy was.

This audio is from an interview conducted by Uni High students Natalie Dullerud, Claire Dickerson, Michael Anukwu and Joaquin Malik, as part of the Uni Class of 2016’s oral history project on the experiences of people associated with the U.S. military from World War II to the present.  It was recorded in January 2012, in Urbana, Illinois, through a partnership between University Laboratory High School and Illinois Public Media, both on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign.

Dec 2, 1942 – Wednesday

It was raining again this morning but soon quit. We spent the rest of the day getting things ready to go on our march to Rabat. It is to be a long hike of 55 miles as I’m going to bed early and try to get some rest.

Letter Home – December 2, 1942

Dear Mother & Dad & All,
Well I haven’t wrote to you for some time now, but there’s just not a thing to write about. We have been given strict censor orders and there’s not a thing you can say. I might as well write I am OK and well, Love “Chick”. I sling a little bull to fill up the space. You can tell every one that I’m short on paper so not to expect many letters from me. Tell them all hello for me thought. I know that most of my letters were censored but let me known if you knew where I was in Africa. I am still in the –CENSORED– part of Africa and that’s about all I can tell. Now I know you and dad are both worrying about me but stop that. You know I can take care of my self and I’ll be home soon. At night we listen to the German propaganda and boy do we get a laugh out of it. Let me know if you received those pictures I sent home or not. If you didn’t, someone got some great souvenirs. I’ll try to draft you a line from time to time but don’t expect too much. I received my first over sea mail the other day but it was a month old. Good by and I love you both.
Your Son “Chick”

Dec 1, 1942 – Tuesday

Today is Mrs. Fleshner’s birthday. I didn’t send her a card and I thought of her anyway. The fellows went out on a warmup hike to get ready for the hike to Rabat. we had to sort out ammunition today and take the tracer cartridges out of the clips. Everyone is getting ready for the move to Rabat and everyone knows we are getting close to a battle again. I thought we would go to bed early last night but we stayed up until 11:30am and just shot the breeze. I think I will write a few letters now and then go to bed.

Nov 30, 1942 – Monday

Well we had been here in Africa 3 weeks ago today. It was a beautiful day today. The sun has been shinning all day and it was war all day. We worked all day as usual, as one day is just the same as the next. I had to pass out allot of insect powder and clothes to the men today. We received our ration of tobacco and candy today. We listened to the Victrola and then went to bed.

Nov 29, 1942 – Sunday

We got to sleep till about 8:30am this morning and after breakfast we went into Fedala to mass. The church we were in had the back end of it blown out and all that was left was the altar. It seemed funny but the shell had not harmed anything on the altar. After mass we rode around town and them came back to camp. It was a good thing too, as it started to rain. We had a lot of shortages to make up so we had to go right ahead and work. At night we sat around the fire and talked. I didn’t feel very good so I went to bed about 7:30pm

Nov 28, 1942 – Saturday

It is still raining a little now and then. We had a equipment inspection today to get us ready for the move to Rabat. If the rain still keeps up it will keep us in our tents today. Most of the fellows have been working unloading gas and oil for the air planes. Here it is 7:30 and we are listening to the Army Navy game back home. It must be about 1:30pm back home. It is still raining a little now and then so I guess I will crawl in my fart sack and get some sleep. Good Night.

Nov 27, 1942 – Friday

It started raining during the night and is still raining today.  In fact it kept us in our tents most of the day so we played a little cards to pass the time away.  We sat around the fire of the evening and went to bed early.

Nov 26, 1942 – Thursday

Today is Thanksgiving but the only thing we have to be thankful for is that we’re still alive.  We thought we would get a lot to eat today but the breakfast was smaller than most of the other breakfasts. The dinner was good though.  We had roast beef, sweet potatoes, candy and Cigarette.  We were suppose to get white bread but none has shown up so far.    We worked all afternoon and for supper we had cold meat and a French made jelly roll.  the rolls were sure good.  Here we are just getting enough to eat and the people back home are enjoying turkey or chicken.   oh what I would give for some chicken.  Tonight we are going to play records again.

Letter Home, November 26, 1942 – Thanksgiving

Thursday Nov 26, 1942

Dear Mother & Dad
It is Thanksgiving day but no turkey. We had a pretty good meal though. I would have loved to have been home to one of those big turkey dinners. I will be next year though. I guess we had a too good of a thing at Casablanca, because we are now out in the woods. I don’t mind though as we are away from the Arabs and wont be pestered by them. We have all built platforms under our tents so we will be up off the damp ground. It has only rained about twice since we have been here and it is during the winter rainy months to so you can tell it pretty nice here *** CENSORED *** from where we are now. It is the *** CENSORED *** Did you and dad go out to eat today. I bet you felt kinda lost with Gee gone to. Right now I am setting by our little camp fire listing to the ‘Ball of Fire’ play, put on by the Lux Ladies program on the Victrola. I guess my letters will see all full far in between, but it can’t be helped. Good by and I’ll be thinking and loving you all of the time.
Your son “Chick”
