Jan 9, 1943 – Saturday

The sun is shinning today and it really looks like its going to be a fine day. I had to take my laundry in last night so I had to hang it out again today. The General was around today and everyone had to be on their toes. Not much happened. The fellows all had to go out on a problem this afternoon.

Shower time

Today was laundry day so I sent a few pieces. It doesn’t cost us anything so its pretty good. We received our file cabinet and records this morning. The sun is shinning for a change so I’m going to try to take a bath. I haven’t had one now for about 8 days. It has been too cold and rainy. The weather cleared up so I took a shower. It was good thing as we had a physical inspection. Boy the medium tanks have been rolling by all week so something is going to happen soon and I hope it does. I also did my laundry today and wrote a letter to mom & dad. Boy I just can’t seem to write to anyone. We played cards for a while and then I read a little.

Letter Home – January 8, 1943 | Dad’s Birthday Card

Hello Dad;
I have carried this with me for a long time knowing that your birthday would come around.  I would sure love to be home with you so we could go hunting together.  Take care of Mom and don’t let her worry to much, as I know she does.  I am well and happy.  I’ll be home one of these days, then you, “Snook” and I can go out along the river and see who is till the best shot.  Good by and I’ll be thinking of you.
Your Son “Chick”

Jan 7, 1943 – Thursday

Last night they bombed Casablanca so that was the reason for the Black out. Not much damage was done. It just killed a few Arabs. It has been raining all day now so not much was going on. In the evening we played cribbage for a while and then I read a book until I went to sleep. Just about every night I get a candle and place it by my head while I lay in my fart sack and read.

Entrance to Rabat

Not much happened today so we cleaned up the place a little. In the evening, Wellman and I played a little ball and then wrote some letters. It’s a black out now for what I don’t know.

Jan 5, 1943 – Tuesday

I think we will give up getting any supplies in so I am going to town. Olson and I really had a swell time. First we went through the old city and then ate dinner. You cant get allot to eat hear so we had six eggs a piece. After dinner we went to an American show, which was free. We saw “Untamed” it was pretty good. After that we went to the USO and had good old American coffee & doughnuts. We caught a giddy uppy and rode around for a while and then went shopping. We then ate supper and I had chicken. It was sure a treat compared with hash & stew all of the time. When we got home, we got in on a drawing and I received a candy bar, some kids got a carton of cigarettes, but I’m glad I got the candy. It has been about two months since I had a good candy so I just babied that Hershey bar along. I was sure good. At night, Olson & I beat Wellman & Badali again.

Jan 4, 1943 – Monday

Still no supplies. Boy I’ll be glad when they do get here. I have to go on guard tonight, but I don’t mind. I think we will try to go to town tomorrow. We signed the payroll today and we still got partial pay. We also got some V-Mail letters today to send home. We sure don’t need money as just about every thing is free. I think I will write some letters and then go on guard. I am only on from 7 to 11:15.

Letter Home – January 4, 1943

Dear Mother & Dad;
Hear goes another letter. I surely hope you have herd from me so far. Boy thats one thing I wish you would tell the people back home to write me. That’s one thing that you look forward to, and thats mail call. We had a swell New Years Day. The dinner was just about like home. We even had turkey for dinner, with all the trimmings. New Years eve night we had the scare of our life. Some new Battalion has moved in near us and New Years Eve night they shot off some TNT and you should have seen us hit the dirt. Boy it scarred us to death. It sounded just like a bomb falling. We went over and really raised heck with them. One of the fellows even turned one of their officers in to our battalion commander. If they had of landed like we did they wouldn’t want to be going around making loud noises. We have mass in our own area now, so we don’t have so far to go to church. Say mom will you give Margret Behrens my address and also send me hers and Mrs. Fleshner’s. Tell them all hello for me and I am thinking of them even though I don’t write to them I have wrote them a couple of letters but I suppose they have moved before it got home. I am going to send you home a check that Mr. Kuhn has sent me. Just cash it and put it in with the rest of my money. Use all of my money that you want to as it wont do me any good. Now don’t either of you go worrying about me, as I have told you before I am well and here is nothing to worry about. It will take about a year to get this mess cleared up, so don’t expect me home until next Christmas. I have lost Buds address also so you can send me his also tell Mrs. Nelson to tell Bud hello for me. My last letter from you was dated Dec. 10th and you still havent herd from me yet. Well I guess I had better close for now so write to me when you have time and I will always be thinking and praying for you both.
Just me your son “Chick”
