Jan 3, 1943 – Sunday

I went to mass in our own area this morning. We have mass here at 9:30am. It has been raining all morning and we are to play the third platoon a ball game. But it looks as if we wont play ball at all. It has stopped now so we are going to play. Boy we thought we couldn’t be beat but we found out that we could. We lost 9 to 8. It was a good game though. I was sure tired when I got through. I wrote a few letters and then went to bed.

Jan 2, 1943 – Saturday

Another day and still no supplies. Not much was going on so we built our stove over. Boy it sure throws off heat now. I played Volleyball for a while and then wrote some letters. We spent most of the night shooting the breeze while the rest of the fellows were out on a night problem.

Jan 1, 1943 – Friday

Today starts a new year. Happy New Year everyone. We are having mass right here in our own area now at 9:30am so I went to mass. Headquarters Platoon is going to play the first platoon a softball game. We practiced a little while in the morning and then ate dinner. We had a good dinner. We had turkey today and all the trimmings, with wine to drink. In the afternoon we had our ball game. I bet Willy Hood $5.00 on the game and for a while I thought I had lost it. I hit a home run with two guys on base in the fourth inning to put us ahead 3 to 0 but in the last of the sixth, I walked 3 fellows and then with two outs a fellow gets on, on an error and then another gets a 2 base hit and they go ahead 4 to 3. But with bases full in the first of the 7th, Wellman comes to the rescue and gets a hit that put us ahead. That started it. When the game ended we won 12 to 4. Olson and I again took Badali and Wellman in cribbage.

Dec 31, 1942 – Thursday

Wow! What a day. It is raining and snowing and sleeting all at the same time. It looks as if I am going to spend another day inside. Swanny is also very sick and has a high fever so they are taking him to the hospital. Boy the weather is sure getting the fellows. Tonight is New Years Eve and the first Sargent brought us in 3 quarts of old wine. I went down to the kitchen to get some grease to fry eggs with. They were getting turkeys and also making doughnuts so I ate about eight doughnuts and came back. We cooked eggs and drank wine until bed time.

Wall at Rabat

Boy is it ever cold and raining here. Every one is staying in the pup tent today. It looks as if the rain is never going to stop. We didn’t do a thing today as the rain kept us in. They took Ross to the hospital with a high fever. I sure hope it quits raining.

All we did today was straighten up the supply room and tried to fix our stove. I went down to the P.X. today and brought 4 doz eggs. they won’t last long. We played a little volleyball tonight for a while and then play some more cribbage it seems as if that is all we do. Our supplies should be coming in a day or so.

City of Rabat

Not much happened today. We tried to make a stove, but it smoked so much that it chocked us out of the tent. We are going to try and make it different now. We buy eggs from the Arabs as we don’t get quite enough to eat and we are tired of the same thing over and over. Wellman bought 3 dozen yesterday and we each ate a dozen tonight so I will have to get some more tomorrow. I made a frying pan that will fry a dozen at a time. Olson and I took Wellman and Badalli again in Cribbage for 94 franc’s this time. It looks as if it will rain tonight. Good Night.

Letter Home – December 28, 1942

Dear Mother & Dad,
Hello! How is every one at home? Ok I hope. I’m fine and feel swell. It sure doesn’t seem like there is a war going on here. But look out. You know that’s the only way were going to get the war over with. I still say we will be home by next Christmas. I went to 10:15am mass Sunday and it started raining just as mass started so four of us fellows held a blanket over the alter as the Priest has to finish the mass once it started. Boy we sure got wet. I cleared off in the after noon and we played ball. We had a good game but our team lost 3 to 2. Did you read what the fellows that were wounded here when we landed had to say about the place. We had some news that the — CENSORED — fellows arrived home. We have just had a mail call. Mr. Kuhn sent me $10.00 today. I’ll write him and thank him and you have dad thank him too. Good by and I’ll write you both again New Years day. I suppose Paul Wilson is here but I don’t know where.
Your son “Chick”

Sale in distance

Well we sang songs until bed time last night and we had a lot of fun I gave my straw tick to one of the fellows that just came in. Boy it was sure cold without it but they only had 2 blankets. We gave some of our boards to ‘B’ Company and then spent the rest of the day straightening up the supply room. We threw gas on our Christmas tree and burnt it down. I just sat around in the supply room and shot the breeze and also I wrote a few letters. Tomorrow is Sunday and I will go to 10:15 mass. Good night.
