Jan 17, 1943 – Sunday

Dog gone it’s raining again. It has rained 4 out of the last five Sundays. We built an altar during the week and then this morning we had to put a shelter up for the priest. It looks as if its going t rain all day. I have a little cold and the weather wont help it now. We went in town to a show this afternoon. We rode in a truck and saw ‘My Favorite Wife”. Cary Grant & Irene Dunn. It was swell and good treat. I played some volley ball when I got home and then wrote some letters.

Letter Home – January 17, 1943

Hello Mother & Dad
I have just come home from a show. We went into town by truck to go to the show. It was quite a treat and we saw a good show also. It was Cary grant and Irene Dunn in “My Favorite Wife”. Boy was it ever funny. We haven’t been doing much so I will try to answer a few of your questions. I have received all of the few or mail and I’d really appreciate it. You also ask how I slept. Well I am pretty lucky. Us three Fellows that worked and the supply room sleep in the supply tent. The rest to sleep and pup tents. I sleep on a mattress cover and a sleeping bag so I am warm and comfortable. That puts the and two were a number one. As for trying to find someone here that is out of the question. You wouldn’t know where to start. Have you sent me Margie Behrnes & Fleshner’s address yet? I will be looking forward to the candy you are sending me but we get hard tack candy about twice a week. Well good by mom and dad four to day I’ll write more letters. I’ll be thinking of you both.

Not much happened today. We did have an accident though and put 10 fellows in the hospital. I don’t know how badly they are yet. A trailer turned over on them. I spent most of the day cleaning up the supply room and reading a book.

Letter Home – January 13, 1943

Dear Mother & Dad;
Well I herd from you to-day so I will try and answer it right away. I am well and fine and I am sorry to here that Dad & Gee were sick. You still don’t know where I am yet but you should know where I am by now. You know that Luther boy that you wrote me about, well he was in the ship right ahead of us. You know what he said about some of the ships well the ship we were on went down. I guess I can tell you this now but I was afraid to before. Some of the things he told you were true but he kinda exaggerated it a little bit. But most of it was true especially the snipers.
Harold Colbert landed at a different place that we did. So maybe I will see him some time. I still don’t know where Paul Wilson is. The weather here sure has been terrible here. The sun hardly shines any more. We are in the rainy season now though so it will soon change. I received a card from Margaret to-day also so tell her hello for me and that I am thinking of her and as soon as I get her address I will write her a letter. I herd from Uncle Sam to-day also. Tell Betty McCole thanks for the ring Rosary and when I get time I will drop her a line. When ever you write to me from now on write them V-mail airmail. They go three times as fast. I surley owe the letters. I havent wrote to any body for a long time including you and dad. I am typing this candle light so I hope it turns out OK. I bet Mrs. Grierson is having a fit as I have only wrote her two letters since I have been here. Tell them all hello and for them to write me even thought they don’t here from me. Boy one thing that I look forward to is mail call. I know you look forward to getting my letters so I will do everything in my power to write to you at least once or twice a week, mostly twice. Well folks good by and I will be thinking of you all.

View of Rabat

Its a bad day today. It has been raining and it’s cold. I’ll be glad when the weather was good. I sure wish we would get some mail from home. We got a few more supplies in today and I took some ammunition or empty cartridges over to the Bn. Supply. I think I will write some letters tonight. I’ll be dog gone if we didn’t get mail today. In mom’s letter there’s a colored boy that was in our convoy. He was a sailor. He told about the landing at Casablanca. He told some truth but he should have been in the landing. Wow! I guess I will write some letters and go to bed. Good Night.

Hospital in Rabat

Two of the platoons have to work today so I don’t know whether we have to work or not. I am going to 9:30am mass. I surely don’t have to walk far. Only about 50 steps. Well we are going to play the 3rd platoon again. I’ll be dog gone if we didn’t lose again 7 to 2. We only had 5 of our regular players so that’s some kind of an excuse. Maybe we will do better next time. I took a shower in the afternoon and boy was it ever cold when the wind hit. We played knock poker for a while and I went to bed $.35 winner.
