TaorminaMessed around all day nothing new happened. I went to town to see if I could get my film but didn’t get it. We went to a G I show at 6:00 P.M. It was pretty good. Came home and played cards until 12:00 o’clock.

Letter home – August 29. 1943

19430829-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad;

Well I’ve only road you a couple of letters in the last 10 days so I had better start this week out a little better. I went into town today to mass. The church today didn’t compare with the church of last Sunday. It was beautiful all right, but that other church – – will you just can’t explain its beauty. I inquired about my allotment so don’t worry something is wrong somewhere. You should have received $45.00 a month starting May 1. I think I will go to town tomorrow. There’s not much there but at least you can get up away from camp. I have never received any of the candy in comic books yet. Maybe I will on one of these days. How is everyone at home? Have you heard from Snook lately. I’ll bet he is still in the states. Well at least I hope so. One of our family in combat is enough, because I know what it is like. Goodbye and I love you both.

August 29, 1943 – Sunday

CathredalI went into town today to mass. It was a beautiful church. On the way back it started to rain. After we got back we tried to pitch some kind of a shelter to sleep under. We just got soaked. i wrote a few letters this morning and played some cards. Boy did it ever rain. After it stopped we pitched an old German tent and moved the supply room in there and slept in the other tent. Went to a show in the evening.

August 28, 1943 – Saturday

SONY DSCWorked around the supply room all morning cleaning M.G’s and Rifles.  We had rifle inspection and my rifle was the best in our platoon.  In the evening Badali and I went over to an airport that was destroyed and there must have been over 200 German planes there.  We put a light in the supply tent and played cards for a while.

Letter home – August 27, 1943

19430827-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad;

Well I have been pretty busy the last few days so I haven’t had time to write. We are making out requisitions for clothes and equipment lost in battle. We have it pretty nice again now, but you never know what what’s in store for you. We get good eats now at least they are better than ‘C’ rations. My waist dropped from 30″ down to 27″ during the Sicilian campaign eating ‘C’ rations. This is the only kind of food you get while in battle and eating the same thing three times a day gets old. I was even lucky if I ate one can. Now we get ‘B’ ratios & yesterday we had steaks. Pour me I just had to go back for seconds, ha, ha. We may get to go town soon, at least I hope so. There is nothing you can buy here anyway. How’s everyone at home? Okay. Tell everyone that I think of them even though I never right. Once you get out of the habit it’s hard to get back in. Goodbye and I love you both.
