Letter Home – September 27, 1944

19440927-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad

I guess this is the only way I have at the present time to catch up on my writing & that’s right to all of you. There is really little to write about. Things are going about the same. The weather is still miserable and it doesn’t look like it’s going to let up. The people say that it will start snowing in another month and the snow is all the way from 4 to 6 feet deep. Maybe the war will be over by then. Now that we have slowed down a little we are getting “B” rations. Today we are having steak and that’s good. I’m beginning to get tired of “spuds” cooked so many different ways, ha, ha. Have you heard any more news from Snook. We have only had about four or five male calls since we have been in France. Guess I had better call it quits and see if I can catch up on a few other letters. Goodbye and write.

Your Son,
“Chick”

September 27, 1944 – Wednesday

SONY DSCOne of our trucks came in from Italy and we had a few supplies on it so I straightened them out. It took about all day to do it. Saw some prisoners go by and they were nothing but little kids. Looked about 13 or 14 years old but the trouble is they are the real Nazis. They fight to the last man. Had a show back down at H. & S. so I went to the show. Wish I hadn’t have gone. We took a back trail and what a road it was. It was nothing but a jeep trail and we went over it in a 2 1/2 ton truck. The show was terrible to top things off.

September 25, 1944 – Monday

SONY DSCBoy it’s miserable out. Foggy and the rain is sure cold. We dug out our stove and set it up. We moved about 3 pm. Went into town and bivouacked in a textile factory. It’s much better than being outside. Played cards and went to bed.

SONY DSCWe moved the first thing this morning. Here we are right on top of a high mountain. Boy, is it ever cold. We set up our tents and only one shell has came in the bivouac. Went to bed early.

Letter Home – September 23, 1944

19440923-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad

Here I am again with nothing to say except it’s raining & that makes things pretty miserable. I wish the weather would change as bad weather slows down the war and I want to get this dang thing over with. Even though I won’t be home for a while I can at least stop sweating.

I had to laugh at Gee’s letter, she said Bud was griping about eating “K” rations because his outfit was in combat. Ha, ha, I just wonder how close he ever gets in a Headquarters Co. Unless his outfit is different then the rest of the signal outfits, he is way behind. But we will never find out until I get to see him. But I’m afraid Snook and I will have it all over him.

I haven’t had a letter from Snook yet so I can’t tell you much about him, as far as I know, I he still back where he landed.

Times have changed here somewhat, the Jerries are taking everything so that makes it bad for us. Guess this is all for now By By & I’ll write again soon. Say hello to all for me.

Your Son,
“Chick”

PS. The mail comes faster than regular mail. I received the film papers & books today.

September 21, 1944 – Thursday

SONY DSCWe cleaned up the truck and moved to a new area. We are going to flank the Germans in a pocket on our right. We moved right after dinner. Germany seems to be dug in and the going is tough.
