January 28, 1945 – Sunday

SONY DSCJoe Pryz and I went to mass this morning. Then worked on boats all day loading and blowing them up. They are going to make another attack tonight. So we have to be ready. They called the attack off for some reason. Listened to the radio.

Letter Home – January 26, 1945

19450126-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad,

I have a few letters here from you dated Dec 28, Jan 2, 6, 7th. Ha, ha. Mother I have to laugh when you tell me not too visit these girls over here. What do you take me for a baby, don’t worry about me. You can tell the good from the bad. Yea, the mail here is just as slow as it is at home. The weather here is really terrible. Last night it snowed about a foot again. What do you mean by the laws being too radical? As for going to church, I go when I can. Well dad I am feeling pretty good, but as for standing the cold weather, that’s another question. I just can’t keep my feet warm, but we only have a couple of months to go, and I have stood it this long, I guess I’ll make out Okea. You wanted to know how things are going, well sometimes they get pretty rough, but I don’t think it’s as bad as the other fronts are getting it. I doubt if you and mom really know where I am. I’d just hope the Russian keep going. Maybe they will bring an end to this war are. Guess I’ll say goodbye to you both, and love you from the bottom of my heart.

Your Son,
“Chick”

January 25, Thursday

SONY DSCThe attack isn’t going any too well. It’s pretty tough going. Dead G.I.’s and Germans are laying all over the place. A few prisoners are coming in. One of the fellows in our outfit was on a truck and the truck was hit by a shell. Cut his head just about off.

Letter Home – January 24, 1945

19450124a-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad,

Here it is two days passed your birthday dad, and I didn’t write you a birthday letter. Happy birthday now anyway. I’ve been on a pass for a change. Had a fine day rest, first one in over a year. The last five day rest I had was last October in Naples, Italy. I really enjoyed myself this time. I went two Strasbourg to visit the friends I had made while we were there. It was pretty risky to go there, but it was worth it. Sometimes I wish the “Krouts” would have surrounded the place & left me in there.

I would’ve liked to have gone to visit bud, but he was too far from me, and I just about froze going to Strasbourg. I was 19450124b-Lscan-600sick most of the time I was there. I wasn’t what you would call sick but I had a hard time keeping something on my stomach. It was just like being home, they fixed everything you could think of to eat for me & I just couldn’t eat.

It really felt good to crawl in between two clean sheets again and a nice feather bed. Boy I slept like a baby. It’s hard to for get friends like those kind of people. Margot, that’s the daughter is 21 years old, and speaks English as good as I or a I should say better than I do because she speaks correct English. She is going to become a professor of languages. She only speaks five languages. I wish I could meet a girl like her in the states. She’s everything a man could ask for. There’s only one thing wrong, and that is she’s a a foreigner. 19450124c-Lscan-600I wouldn’t marry a foreigner for love nor money. She would never when a beauty prize but she’s just what you would call a nice girl.

It released node a while I was there and I was beginning to wonder whether I was going to make it back but there was plenty of traffic and I made it easy. You should see the snow here now, wow its really getting deep.

Did I tell you I received your package with the soup & caramels in it thanks a lot. I also received some more of those pills, but I haven’t any use for them at all.

The only thing I want from home is soup, Velveeta cheese, salami, mustard, mayonnaise. If you can’t get all of this and one package maybe you can use it for another one. Be sure you don’t send a spam or spiced meats. Send something like baloney & minced ham. Just a long as it has the skin peeling left on it. Guess this is all for now, so I’ll say good-bye. All my love.

Your Son,
“Chick”

January 24, 1945 – Wednesday

SONY DSCBoy, I haven’t heard anything like this artillery fire that’s going on before. It has been going steady since last night at 9:30 pm and old Germany is throwing it back just as fast. Received a little mail and I wrote some letters. The attack is still going pretty good.

January 23, 1945 – Tuesday

SONY DSCGod what a night. Every thing was quiet until about 9:30 pm and then all hell broke loose. It has been going on all day. I haven’t heard artillery fire like this since I have been over sea’s. Even in all the time at Anzio there was nothing like it. The planes were over for a while, while it was still clear out and bombed and strafed. It soon clouded up and started to snow. I had to go to the battalion. We have had a couple of men hurt so far and hard telling how many more we will have. They have a lot of bridges to put up.

SONY DSCThe truck is all loaded and they told us not to unload as we don’t have a thing to do but lay around. That’s just about all the rest have to do. The attack is to start tonight at 9 o’clock.

Letter Home – January 21, 1945

19450121-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad,

Well I still haven’t a thing to write about, but I had better let you know that I’m okea. But I surely wish this damn war would come to an end pretty soon, but I don’t see how it possibly can and until this summer. I even received a $25.00 bet that I had made last year, to day. The boy is in the state’s now, but he bet me that the war would be over last Christmas, and it looks like I’ll win $35.00 more this Christmas as I have made the same bet. People are too optimistic about this war in ding so soon. They should be over here, & then they would see how fast it is going to end. These Germans are plenty tough. I know this isn’t much of a letter but at the present time I’m just not in the mood for writing letters. By By

Your Son,
“Chick”
