Letter Home – February 8, 1943

19430208-600-LscanDear Mother and Dad;

Oh what’s new today? Would all have you two been doing? Or the weather here is swell now, but for a little win. The nights will always be cold. Not much has been happening around here lately. Sunday the company had to work on a road as the first Sargent took headquarter platoon out to blow up some stumps and then saw them up for firewood. It was something different anyway. We had the afternoon off so I caught up on my laundry. Boy you should see it! You would disavow me four such tatel tale gray clothes. Oh well that they’re clean anyway. Till every one polo and have misses Fleshner right knee. I know I should write her but you said she had moved and I’m waiting for her address. Goodbye to you both and please don’t worry. I’ll be thinking and loving you both allways.

Feb 8, 1943 – Monday

I had a few odd jobs to do this morning and then I turned in my salvage. In the afternoon the company was off so I just read my book. I am reading “This above all”. Its pretty good in spots. We played a little volleyball and then I wrote a few letters. This laying around is sure getting me. Good night. Oh yes, we had physical inspections today and also a lecture on deceases.

Feb 7, 1843 – Sunday

Being as everyone is moving, there is no mass and the company had to work anyway. The first Sgt. took HQ platoon out to blow up a couple of big stumps. We blew one stump so good that we didn’t have to worry about sawing it. Ha Ha. All we had to do was go around and look for pieces. In the afternoon I did my washing and played a little volleyball. At night we played cards and then went to bed.

Letter Home – February 5, 1943

Dear Mother and Dad;

Well I have a wrote you for some time but I have my reasons so don’t worry. I have been pretty busy and haven’t had time. Also I haven’t had much to say so I might as well not write till I do have something to say. I told “Gee” that I went to see an all old roman and Arabic rule and and it was sure a treat. I have studied them in school, but never expected to get to see one. It was all bill before Christ was born so you can imagine that it was quite old. It was divided into two separate parts. One was Arabic and the other was when the Romans came and conquered the Arabs and then they took over. It was very in arresting and again I say that I’m glad that I got to see it. I’m getting pretty close to Harold Colbert so maybe one of these days I will get to see him.19430205-Lscan

You asked me what kind of chow we ate, it is all American Food but you get tired of eating such things as, well here’s what we get most of the time. For breakfast we get, either, fresh eggs, pancakes, or powdered eggs, with Vienna sausage, or bacon, (which Israel salty) the cereal, a slice of bread with jam, and orange, and of course a drink which is always coffee. For dinner it’s Vienna sausage, spam sliced, weiner’s and sauerkraut, Nellie get one of those three with potatoes (dehydrated) (sometimes fresh potatoes) peas and carrots, oranges, and a drink (which is either a grapefruit juice or eight women drink). For supper, it’s hard telling what you may get. 1st either hash, Stu, corned beef, Chile, macaroni with spinach, peas and carrots, fruit, bread and jam, and a drink which is most of the time tea. We get a lot of juice and fruit. They are pretty good meals but you get tired of eating the same thing over and over. I’ll be glad when I get home and set down to a good home cooked meal. Then I will probably not be able to eat it. Goodbye and thanks again for the candy. I’ll be thinking of you both all the time and say hello to everyone for me

Feb 5, 1943 – Friday

We got back in the same old groove today and didn’t have much to do except a few minor details. I had a little typing to catch up on and that was all I did today. They put up the volleyball nets so we played volley ball in the evening. The company has some roads to build and one of them has to be finished by Sunday. I think I will try and write a letter tonight.

Feb 4, 1943 – Thursday

We were up at 5:00am this morning to eat breakfast and got ready to move. We loaded a ton and a half truck and I was to stay behind with the rest of the stuff. Another truck came so we finished loading the other supplies on and took off. It was an awful trip over there as the back roads were bad. We are about 5 miles out of Port Lyautey and still in a cork forest. The trees are much larger than the last place and it looks as if it might be a better place in which to live. How long we will be here no one knows. We worked hard all day so I am going to write mother & dad and go to bed.

Chella

Not much happened today. We were suppose to get paid in full but instead we only got the equivalent of $6.00 in American money in Francs. I did a little boxing and in the evening I played some poker. It was the first time I had been lucky. I picked up $10.00 and it was only a small game. I was sure lucky tonight.

Entrance to Chellah

Well today I have something to say for a change. In the morning I had a tooth pulled. Boy I had to laugh when I think of it. While the dentist was pulling my tooth I was thinking of some silly pictures of how dentists pulled teeth. Well this tooth had to come out that way. He pulled and pulled, yanked and yanked and still the tooth didn’t come out. He used every kind of instrument he had. He even used a hammer and chisel to split the tooth with but he got it Out. In the afternoon I went to see “Chellah”. It was an old Arabic and Roman ruin which dated back before Christ was born. I had my camera along and took a few pictures. I saw many interesting things though. Tonight the 39th Field Artillery band played for us and could they ever swing it, Wow! I guess I’ll write a couple of letters and then read awhile. We are suppose to move to Port Lyautey this week Sometime.
