Feb 16, 1943 – Tuesday

Same thing happened today as yesterday. I did a little laundry and that’s about all. They issued an order to stop issuing candy & cigarettes so that means we are to have a PX. I hope they have some good candy. We played a little cribbage and then I went to bed.

Feb 15, 1943 – Monday

We are expecting the General around to day so we will have to be on our toes. Well he didn’t come and all we did was set around and wait on him. The company is out working on the road and we have all our work caught up. We played a little volleyball in the evening and then I took a shower. It’s so dusty here that you just have to wash all the time. I wrote a few letters and now to bed.

Letter Home – February 14, 1943

19430214-600-LscanDear Mother & Dad;

I received your Valentine today “Valentines Day”. Pretty good huh! Time right to the day. Our “V” mail letters will soon be photographed so you should get them much sooner. I’m sending you a piece of paper which entitles you to send me the following articles. Just give me a cheap pocket watch and send me my wristwatch. As for the comic books you can get them from Billy or Harry. For that Hershey bars get either Nestles or Almond bars. Be sure they are wrapped good as they get tossed around quite hard. If the candy is too heavy, just fill in it and with comic books so I get hard candy here, but no comic books. Most of the Fellows read them and I get a kick out of them. I went to mass this morning at 11:30 AM. You are probably still in bed. It is sure hot and dusty during the day time here. We play volleyball but of an evening and you get sewed dirty and dusty that you have to take a shower. I guess I will close now and write more later. Goodbye and I’ll be loving you both.

Letter Home – February 11, 1943

19430211-600-LscanDear Mother and Dad

Hello mom and dad, what have you been doing today. Things are just about the same with me. Not much is happening. I got another lead on Paul Williamson and maybe I’ll get to see him yet. We went to a show put on by the Red Cross. It was all French actors and they tried to talk English “slang”. Ha, ha, you should have heard them. We all got a big kick out of it and at least it was something different. Ask Billy if he has a “funny” books and send them to me. Also if you can get me a Pancheo pen paint send it to. Did you ever received the check I sent home. If you ever send me any more candy be sure it chocolate and not hard candy. We get hard Christmas candy here in our rations. Goodbye an I have received all of your mail so far. Dad drop me a line.

Feb 11, 1943 – Thursday

Another day with nothing to do so I read a book, chopped some wood and did my laundry. In the evening I played the Victrola and listened to the news. General Eisenhower made 4 star general and said that he was going to replace British troops with American. This means as soon as we get our equipment up to the front we go.

The company had the day off today and in the afternoon we went to a Red Cross show. It was put on by some french actors. They new very little English so that made it all the better. We all had a good time but we had to walk six miles to get there. We played a little volleyball and then some cards.

Feb 9, 1943 – Tuesday.

The days are much easier now as we have very little to do. The company has their roads to build and we have practically nothing to do. I made out a few requisitions today and did my laundry. We played some pinochle in the evening and I lost $1.00. The weather is really swell here and it hasn’t rained for about three weeks. The soil is nothing but sand & dust.
