April 23, 1943 – Friday

We rode out about 12 miles today to practice taking out obstacles in the water. We did all types of demolition and had a good time along with our work. In all it was a plenty easy day but a lot of fun. I was tired and went to bed early.

April 22, 1943 – Thursday

SONY DSCWe had a pretty easily day today. We hiked down to the beach (about 7 miles) and then played around on the beach in rubber landing boats. We all had a swell time, and it was quite a change from what we have been used to doing. We then hiked home. We then went to take showers. I went to mass tonight, being this was Holy Thursday. It was bed time when I came home.

Letter home – April 21, 1943

19430421-LscanYour Mother & Dad;
I still have little time to write but will drop you a line. We are kept on the go all of the time now, and by the time I get my face and clothes washed, it is bedtime. Then you start the next day over again. Boy it is really hot here in the day time now, and I am getting just as brown as a nigger. I received the film to day and thanks a lot, get me some more if you can. I received a bunch of birthday candy today so tell everyone thanks for now and I will write when I get time. I got the stamps to day also, but I guess there isn’t any use to send me any more. Good bye for now and I will write and you again soon. I’ll be loving you both.

April 21, 1943 – Wednesday

We got to sleep until 7:00 AM this morning and was pretty lucky to get that much. I worked around the supply room today and the rest of the company went out to the rifle range. I wrote a few letters, took a bath in a bucket of water, washed some clothes and by that time it was bed time so that ended another day.

The same thing happened today and it was worse than yesterday. Today we made 2 landings, one in the morning that finished at 2:00 PM, and the other that started at 6:30 PM and ended at 3:00 AM. All we had to do was put in a road block.

Letter home – April 19, 1943

19430419-LscanDear Mother & Dad,
Well here goes again. Have little to say and not much time to stay in. We are kept pretty busy here now. It seems like one day just ends and another one begins. I wish I could tell you all that we do and that way I would have an interesting letter home to you. You wake up before day break, eat breakfast and start out. You get in around 5:30 or 6:00 PM at night and by the time you eat chow, shave and wash its time for bed. Today is Sunday and I had just come home from mass. Sundays are just like all days but they have mass of an evening. Today we went out working and when noon time came we got the afternoon off but we were 12 miles from home. So we spent our afternoon off by walking home, ha ha. Boy was I tired. Well this is all for now. Tell every one hello and when I get time I will write them. I’ll be loving you both.

April 19, 1943 – Monday

We were up early this morning as we were going to go on landing maneuvers. This time instead of using Higgins Boats we used big barges. We were on the medium barge and they hold 6 medium tanks and personnel. The large ones take a whole company at one time so their next invasion took out. We were out until about 5:00 PM. I was really tired when I got home so I went to bed early.

We went out to the range in trucks today and we were to learn how to take out a pillbox. I was a demolition man. The flame throwers and we two demolition men went up a ravine with machine gun and rifle fire over the top of head. The fire was so close to us that if we went to stand up it would have hit us. The flame throwers threw their flames on the pillbox and then after they were through we threw both of our demolition charges and got the hell out of there before they went off. We had the afternoon off, but we were 12 miles from home and had to walk home. Boy was I ever tired. We went to mass at 6:00, and then I came home and went to bed.

April 17, 1943 – Saturday

Went out with the company again today and the 2nd Pl. was attached to the 2nd Bn of the 7th Infantry. We laid a mine field of British mines this morning and after we got them laid out we had to pick up and lay it again. I’m telling you when you lay out 1,500 mines its not easy. We had a battle against tanks and the tanks won. They out flanked us. We then had a talk by the General. We had a pretty rugged time of it and I am pretty tired so I guess I’ll go to bed.

April 16, 1943 – Friday

SONY DSCWe hiked back out today and had quite a lot of fun. We built a lot of obstacles in the water and then went out in a boat and made a landing on it. Boy when the Bangalore torpedoes go off you have enough room to drive a truck through. We all got wet but had a good time. We walked home and I was tired again so I wet to bed early.
