April 29, 1943 – Thursday

Today is my mothers birthday. We spent the morning cleaning my equipment and straightening things around the camp. In the afternoon we all went swimming in the sea. It was a good thing as most of us were plenty dirty. I tried to write some letters but gave it up as a bad job. Lets see what tomorrow will bring.

Letter home – April 28, 1943

19430428-LscanDear Mother & Dad;
Just a few lines to let you know I’m OK. I still haven’t had much time to write to anyone. Tell them all hello and as soon as I find time I will write them. Maybe by this Sunday I will have time. Boy right now \I’m just as filthy as I can be. One good thing I’m good and tan so the dirt doesn’t show, ha ha. Just think yesterday was my birthday and tomorrow is yours. You should have seen the way I spent my birthday. I hope you had a much better time than I did. I’ll make up for it one of these days. I hope you received my card on time. Goodbye and I’ll be loving you both.
Your Son “Chick”

April 28, 1943 – Wednesday

SONY DSCWe packed up mostly everything except barracks bags and waited to pull out. We left about 12:00 o’clock for the new Bivouac area. I had to watch and guide the extra trucks over and load up the rest of the boys and then took off. We got to our new area and its in between two large Mts. It’s not a bad place but it will be plenty hot. We had mail call and then I went to bed early.

Today is my birthday and I still don’t feel any older. We worked on the camouflage nets all day until 3:00PM then went swimming. The sea is a lot calmer than the ocean and the water was kind a warm. We just laid around and talked until bed time. A fine way to spend your birthday.

April 26, 1943 – Monday

SONY DSCWe were up early this morning and were soon at work tearing down the camp and getting ready to move. We left the Bivouac area at 1:30 PM. We pitched our tents as we will have to wait until the company captures the Bivouac area. Then we will move on. We just walked down to the beach so you couldn’t go to town. I was tired and went to bed early.

Letter home – April 25, 1943

19430425-LscanDear Mother & Dad;
Today is Easter an I just seems like another day to me. We had mail call today and I received a letter from you and Gee. It was the first V-mail letter that I have received from you that was photographed. I guess they are photographing all of the V-Mail now though. You said in your the letter that I had three packages on the way, well I have received two of them so now I only have the pipe coming. I haven’t received any of the papers yet but I suppose it will take a little time to get them through. I will let you know as soon as I get them. As for the fountain pen, I took a pair of pliers and bent the point over again. It didn’t have any thing to lose by it, and it turned out for the best. Now I can use it again.
Boy if you only knew how hard it is to try and write you something in a letter. There it is not much I can say except it is pretty rugged here. The sun is awful hot though through the day and I’m sure brown as an Indian. I have been sun tan a lot of times, but not anything like I’m now. I had my hair cut off again the other day, so it makes me feel a little bit cooler. The nights are still pretty cold though, so you sleep well.
To day being Easter I went to mass. I went this morning to where there was supposed to be a mass, but there wasn’t any there at that time so I had to wait until this evening at 4:00. This is the first time in my life that I have ever went to church in the evening. I have went two plenty of sunrise services, but this was the first sunset service.
We had mail call the other day and that is when I received your packages. I also received a lot of birthday cards and Easter cards. You’ll have to thank everyone for me as I don’t have time to write to any one now of days. Tell them I will write to them the first chance I get. Pretty soon we will have a little time I hope and then I will be able to get caught up. Goodbye for now and I will be loving you both very much.
Your Son “CHICK”

April 25, 1943 – Sunday

Boy every thing seemed to go wrong today. We missed reveille and breakfast, then missed mass. We walked all over trying to find it. Later we found out that there is one at 4PM. We started loading the truck today to go on landing maneuvers. I went to mass, came home washed, wrote a few letters and went to bed.

April 24, 1943 – Saturday

SONY DSCI am going out with the 2nd Pl. today to lay a mine field. We laid 1,500 mines and then had to go back, pick them up and lay them out in another place as they unfortunately didn’t like the place where we laid them. Later in the evening we picked them all up and came home. I was sick all day long. Must be that pill I took for Malaria last night. I went to mass and came home and went to bed.
