Well, I have to get all of my books into shape as we are having an inspection Thursday. Worked hard all day. Played ball and went to see Lore in the evening.

Lore and I went on a picnic up in the mountains. We really had fun. Came home, wrote a couple of letters and went to bed.
June 2, 1945 – Saturday
Got ready for inspection this morning. The Col. came, but he talked about the ball team and didn’t even look around. We played a tournament ball game this afternoon and won 8 to 2. Went over to get a couple of beers.
June 1, 1945 – Friday
Not much to do today. Worked on my records most of the day. Played a ball game and I pitched . It was a no hit no run ball game. Took a bath and went over to Lore’s.
May 31, 1945 – Thursday
Back to work today. Just odd jobs to do but they keep you going. Played ball, and went out as usual.
Letter Home – May 30, 1945
Dear Mother & Dad;
Well we are enjoying a holiday today. Thats what I like because I can sleep late. Even had Joe Pryz bring my breakfast in bed to me, ha ha. Lazy aren’t I.
Well dad I pitched my first game of ball last night and won 3 to 0. I just haven’t had the confidence in pitching this year so I haven’t started. Well last night I pitched a no hit, no run ball game. You should have heard the gang howl. I don’t know but I just don’t like to pitch anymore. Had a good team behind me tho.
Well mom Here’s a present for you from my girl. They 
are handmade and she made them herself. There for handkerchiefs in case you didn’t know, ha ha. You can say you at least had one souvenir from Austria. I am always telling her how swell my mother and dad are. So she ups and gives me these for you. Sorry Pop she didn’t have anything for you.
Nothing new going on here. They don’t censor mail anymore so ask me any questions you would like to know. I have 115 points now and if my Purple Heart comes through I’ll have 120. Also was put in for the bronze star, but doubt very much if I get it. Was put in for the silver star at Anzio but didn’t get it. Well this is all for now. By By and will write more later. Lots of Love and I’m always thinking of you.

May 30, 1945 – Wednesday
Today is Decoration day, so it’s a holiday. Layed around all day. Should have wrote letters but didn’t. Played a game of ball. Went over to Lore’s.
May 29, 1945 – Tuesday
Went down after some more clothes this morning and turned in a few things. We played another tournament game this afternoon. Played 12 innings and the game ended in a tie 2 to 2. We came home and I pitched my first game of the year and won 3 to 0. It was a no hit no run game. Took a bath. Went over to see Lore for a while and then came home to bed.
Letter Home – May 28, 1945
Dear Mother & Dad;
Well it’s been some time since my last letter to you, but there is little to write about. I’m having a swell time here. But boy I surely hope I make it home soon, but I’m afraid I’ll be essential. There is no one in the supply but me so it will take a couple of months to break in a new kid. I know you want me home, but you know how it is. At least you know I’m safe.
Say Pop we really have a ball team again this year. I have just come from playing a game. Picked up $30.00. Not bed eh. Boy I’m really getting old and 
I’m slowing down. Didn’t think this army could affect me that much but I guess it has. Knocked a ball that should have been a home run, and I just made it to third, ha ha. The main thing is that we won, and that what counts.
Well mom I have gone and fell in love, ha, ha. But there’s no use of you to worry, because she 
is an Austrian girl and it costs us $65.00 to fraternize with Austrians. She is really a wonderful girl, and I know you would like her very much but, well in it’s just not in the books and I’m afraid both of us are going to have a broken heart when I leave to go home. Her family treats me like there own son. In one way I feel pretty guilty. You see when we first came here to Salsburg, I put my supply room in their house. We stayed for a couple of weeks and then they came out with an order that all civilians had to be put out of all houses that any soldiers were in. So out they went. They hate the Americans for it, but they don’t hold it against me. For the last two Sundays now we have went on a picnic up on the mountainside. We really had fun. Her grandmother has some children in America. I thought you would like to know what I’m doing over here so you wouldn’t worry so. Woe is me and my love troubles. Pore Rita thinks I’m coming home to her, and Pat Smith thinks I’m coming home to her. Look out Charlie!!!! They would all be surprised if I brought this girl home, but it’s impossible, and I know you’re glad of that, ha ha. Guess I’ll call this quits for now, will write more later. By By.

3rd Div. HQ.
Had to get my 32 forms into shape. Kept me busy all day. We played a tournament ball game and won 4 to 2. Wrote a couple of letters and went over to see Lore. That’s about all I have time for and they treat me just like I was home. They always have milk and a salad for me.
