July 4, 1943 – Sunday

Boy this is the quietest Fourth of July I have ever spent in some time. I went to 9AM mass and everyone then received communion as we are going into a battle. Although we did not go to confession the priest gave us absolution anyway. I feel a lot better now. I slept all afternoon and we just sat around and talked of what we were doing this time last year. (I was home on a furlough)

Letter home – July 1, 1943

Vmail - 19430701Dear Mother & Dad;
I don’t even know what month it is do I? Okay well it doesn’t make any difference anyway, I’m not going anyplace. I have received any of the packages yet but I will let you know as soon as I do. By the way you had better get the C. paper renewed. We have a lot of work to do ahead of us so if you do not hear from me as often as you do think nothing of it.
How would you like to go see a movie and right in the middle of the picture they call it off account of and air raid. We were on top of a hill and you could just set and watch a different kind of a show.
Tell Gee thanks for the pictures that she sent. What all are you and dad doing? Why are the flies ever big here, and he makes it all the worse. Well this is all I have to say now so goodbye & I’ll be loving you both.
Your Son “Chick”

SONY DSCAnother raid again this morning. They seemed to be a everyday occurrence. We issued out someone clothes this morning and laid around all afternoon. We went to the show tonight and during the show we had an air raid. We went on top of a hill and saw the hole show. Paratroopers were supposed to have been dropped as they picked up a couple of them at Perryville.

June 28, 1943 – Monday

Had another raid last night, but the ack, ack was light, so there must not have been many planes. We went over to the Bn Supply & picked up a few clothes to issue out. I spent the afternoon just laying around. There is not much to do now anyway. We played a little pinochle and then made some cocoa before going to bed.

June 27, 1943 – Sunday

Had a small raid this morning and only a few bombs were dropped. I went to 9:00AM mass. After mass I wrote a few letters and in the afternoon we played cards. It sure doesn’t seem like there is a large landing coming up but it is getting closer each day. We went to the 3rd Medics to a show.
