December 6, 1943 – Monday

SONY DSCIt has been raining all day.  The mud is so bad in the supply room that we went after some gravel to put on the floor.  In the evening I popped some corn that Es and Harry sent me.  Boy it really popped swell.  Gee, but it tasted good to eat pop corn again.  I think I will write home home for some more.  They do not raise pop corn here.  Why I do not know.  Played pinochle with the kitchen force.  Badali and I won. Came home and read.

Letter Home – December 5, 1943

Letter Home 1943-12-05Dear Mother & Dad,

You won’t have to worry about my allotment anymore. I hope by now that it is fixed up. Our company clerk wrote to Washington about it, so they will get it straightened out. Just let me know how the checks keep coming in until it really does get straightened out. I am going to fix a box up in a couple of days and send some things home.  I have my negatives so when you send them away to have them developed have two copies made and send one copy to Mr. Brewing. Did you have the other prints made? Did did you send them? There is very little to write about here.  It’s just about the same old thing. ha, ha, It’s still rains every day and the mud here is about the gooiest mud I had ever been in. I received a couple of more packages today. Mom I don’t know what I’m going to do with it all. By the way, please send some more comic books goodbye.

Your Son
“Chick”

December 5, 1943 – Sunday

SONY DSCWent to mass this morning at 9:00 AM.  Had a mail call and I received two packages one from May and one from Marie Sass.  Had another mail call in the afternoon and I got three more bringing my total of Christmas boxes to 17.  Boy do I have the junk to eat.  Tried to catch up on my letter writing and then went to bed.  It is raining very hard now.  Heaven only knows when it will stop.

Letter Home – December 1, 1943

19431201a-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad,

So far today I have received twelve packages. Two from you and thanks a million. Everything was swell. The milky way bars were fresh as they could be. I will write and tell you some day of all of the people that sent me a Christmas box. I don’t know how I will repay all of them. Mrs. Goldsby’s cake was delicious. It was just a little moldy but what’s mold to a bunch of hungry soldiers. We ate mold and all. Boy but was good. I will write and think her four in it. I only got about one piece but some of the fellows don’t get packages so we all ate it. Everyone just raved over it. I also received one box that was in a Crisco can and had a Campbells wrapping paper around it. Did Mrs. Fleshner send it? There wasn’t any 19431201b-Lscan-600return address in it.  It it made me feel badly because I don’t know whom to thank and they may feel slighted. If it was her tell her I said thanks. The weather here is just the same it was snowing up in the mountains today and it looked so funny to see it snowing up there and not down in the valley where we were.  I believe that it is the first time I have ever seen anything like that. Well mom and dad I have better get to bed. That’s one way to keep warm. Goodbye and I love you both very much.

Your son,
“Chick”

December 1, 1943 – Wednesday

SONY DSC25 days until Christmas.  I wonder if we will be in combat by then.  No one knows.  It rained all day.  We put some sand bags in our tent so it wouldn’t be so muddy.  It snowed up in the mountains above us today.  Looked so funny to be snowing up there and raining here.  I wrote a few letters tonight and went to bed.
