April 3, 1944 – Monday

SONY DSCMan Germany bombed the hell out of us last night, but lucky no one was hurt. Most of us are below the ground any way. Melgard and I sleep in the big supply tent and don’t have and roof over us so we got pretty scared. A lot of pup tents and equipment were tore up and one truck put out of commission. They raided every where last night. We all worked around in the supply room today had a lot of clothes to get rid of. Wrote a few letters and went to bed.

Letter Home – April 2, 1944

19440402-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad;

Just received three letters from you. I have about two months stacked by me now, and one of these days when I get time I will answer all of your questions. Yes I have received all of the packages that you have sent me. Still nothing new to write about here. Things are quite the same. Boy Champaign seems to be going great guns in the basketball tournament. Who knows, maybe they might win. I’m sweating out your next letter to see how they came out. Say Dad did you when any pools this year, ha ha. I bet your Fellows on the second floor had quite a time. Guess this is all for now so will bring this to a close. You can send me some candy bars a if you can get them. Also some popcorn. Goodbye and I love you both.

Your Son,
“Chick”

April 2, 1944 – Sunday

SONY DSCWent to Malaria school today at the 52 Evac. Stayed there all day long. Saw a few shows on the prevention of Malaria and how to control it. It was all very interesting. Came home, ate, sat around and talked, read my papers and went to bed. Today the clock was moved ahead 1 hr.

April 1, 1944 – Saturday

SONY DSCThe company is out working today. We had to go pick up two truck loads of concertina, pickets and barbed wire. They lobbed a few shells in but not too close. I went down to the battalion and picked up some Engineer Equipment. Played cards again tonight. Lost all the money I had an $10.00 of DeVoss money.

March 30, 1944 – Thursday

SONY DSCMan did Jerry lay them in last night. They hit our R7 cat and completely demolished it. Had me pretty scared for a while. We worked around the supply room, issued out a few more clothes and played some more cards at night. I have lost 8 bucks last night and 8 again tonight, but my luck will change.

Letter Home – March 29, 1944

19440329-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad;

Another day has passed and still I have little to say to you both. Really it’s very hard to write a letter here as you can say very little anyway. You know most of what what’s going on by following the paper. Got a letter from Bud. He is in England. Poor kid, I don’t think he has really realized what it will be like when he gets into combat. He wants to get into it but I bet the first day he will want to be out of it, ha, ha. I know, as our division has had plenty of it. Being in England is more like being in a different camp in the States. At least they can understand one another. Well maybe one of these days I’ll make it back home, but don’t count too much on it. Tell everyone a hello and when I get time I will write to them. Goodbye and I love you both

Letter Home – March 27, 1944

19440327-Lscan-600My Dear Mother & Dad,

Just a line to let you know I’m OK and still working pretty hard. I know I should write more often but we are pretty busy all of the time and I haven’t had a chance to write to anyone so when you see some of the people that I write to tell them hello and I’ll write them the first chance I get. There is still little too right about here and your mail is coming in swell. I’m glad that you have heard from me. Had a letter from Snook, he said he had a couple of boxes of candy and wished that I could come over but as usual it is too hard to get over to him. Will get to see him one of these days. You can send me some caramel and candy bars if you can get them. Goodbye and I love you both.

Your Son
