June 15, 1944 – Thursday

SONY DSCWe loaded the supply and got ready to move. We left our area about 2 pm. It took quite a while to get through town as the traffic was heavy. We are out in the woods about 17 miles from Rome.

June 14, 1944 – Wednesday

SONY DSC Well, we didn’t move today and Wellman went to town. So I was alone in the supply room. Most of the work is caught up and the company is all out on pass anyway. Went over and had my picture taken. Started drinking Champagne and got SONY DSCpretty high. We had to load the 4 ton and after that I went to bed.

June 13, 1944 – Tuesday

SONY DSCWent to town today and had a swell time. Willie and I walked all morning. We went to St. Peters and got to see the Pope, which was really a treat. The Pope can speak 17 different languages. In the afternoon we ran into Grosch and his truck so we spent the rest of the afternoon seeing the city by truck. We went every place there was to go. We even had picked up a case of meat at the QM and traded it for 12 bottles of Champagne. We came back to camp about 6 pm. Went to a show and then to bed.

Letter Home – June 12, 1944

19440612-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad

Still have very little to say, or I should say nothing to write about. The censors here have been pretty strict on what you can say in a letter. One of these day they will lift the restriction and then I will have plenty to write about. Many things have happened lately as you have already read in the papers. I received my company’s stars to day, so I am including them in this letter. Tell everyone hello and that I am still quite busy. I will write to all of you soon. Put the stars on my campaign ribbon. Just push them through the center of the ribbon & fasten them down. Goodbye and I love you both.

Lots of love
Your Son,
“Chick”

Letter Home – June 9, 1944

19440609-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad

Sorry to be so late in writing but we are awful busy at the present time. One of these days I will write you both all about it. Say hello to all of my friends and tell them that I will write when I get time. I saw John Murry by accident the other day. Passed him on the road. I am Okea and in good health. Received two packages in good shape the other day. Thanks a lot. Goodbye & don’t worry

Your Son,
“Chick”
