SONY DSCWell, I’ll be dog-gone if I didn’t make T/5 today. I should have made T/4 but one of the Cat drivers deserved it more than I did. Maybe I’ll make it some day. Worked on my books. Kept myself pretty busy all day. Went to a show tonight and then to bed.

Letter Home – July 12, 1944

19440712a-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad

Mail has been coming in swell and everyone seems to be doing a swell job too. I also received a couple of packages. It’s a little warm to send candy now, but I can always use the popcorn or hot tamales. I received one package from Es and Harry and one of the jars broke and ruined and the whole package. The way your pack them they are Okea.

Paul Wilson was out to see me today. I was afraid I wasn’t going to get two see him. He really looks swell. He has picked up a lot of weight since I last saw him. I wish I had his job, but I guess all of us can’t stay behind and I’m one of the unlucky ones.

19440712b-Lscan-600Say, what’s that you want too know all about Joe. He was only in the battlefield about three weeks and was sent back to duty. He and I are together just about every day. So his boyfriend told you that we would be home soon. Now mom don’t raise your hopes to high. I know you would like to see me home, but the percentage is so small that I will still be here when the war is over and then maybe I’ll make it home. One thing, it can’t last forever. But I’ll be home, and in one piece to. I have too many women praying for me, ha, ha.

Well by now you should know all about me being hurt. See I told you it was nothing. Next time, if there is a next time, I will write you all about it first and beat the government to it, ha, ha.

19440712c-Lscan-600Guess I had better close for now goodbye to you both and tell Gee I’ll write her tomorrow.

Your Son,
“Chick”

July 10, 1944 – Monday

SONY DSCThe days are all the same now not much going on. Another one of the fellows was killed and 3 more wounded. That brings the Battalion Casualties well over 40 in killed or wounded, for what, nothing. Just because we have to clear a German mine field. Went to a show tonight.
