November 25, 1944 – Saturday

SONY DSCDid quite a bit of work this morning. Zirkel and I went down to the butcher shop and bought some beef. We made a roast out of it and had it for supper. Played cards and went to bed.

Letter Home – November 23, 1944

19441123-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad,

Here it is thanksgiving day but what a day. It has rained all day and is it miserable. We had a wonderful dinner, “canned stew”. What a life the army is. We did have a pretty good supper. We had Turkey and dressing.

What kind of dinner did you have at home, or did you make dad take you out to eat. I’ll surely be glad to get home so we can have some good time together

I got quite a kick out of your last letter, telling me the gossip. Know I never did like Glenor and I’d never did light Rita to run around with him so I told her so. I really wrote Rita a letter, the last time I wrote to her, so I doubt if I’ll be hearing from her anymore. I won it in it one way or another and I told her just that. It doesn’t bother me at all and sometime I think I would be better off without her. But we will see. By By Mom and Dad and I’ll write again soon. Lots of Love

Your Son,
Chick”

November 23, 1944 – Thursday Thanksgiving

SONY DSCWhat a day it has been raining all day. We moved again and took all morning. Passed a pile of dead Germans and Americans along the way. They were just stacked up like wood. Must have been 10 or 15 in the pile. We found — illegible — again. Here it is Thanksgiving and we had stew for dinner, but we did have a good supper. Turkey with all the trimmings. Played cards and went to bed.

SONY DSCThe drive is still on and from the last reports the infantry is advancing steady. The town of St. Die was burned as well as a few other small towns and villages. The Germans are destroying every thing. Wrote a few letters.

November 20, 1944 – Monday

SONY DSCThey went out again last night and put it up. You should have heard the racket this morning. Thousands of artillery pieces opened up to start the drive. The infantry crossed the river and moved ahead. We played some cards in the evening.

Letter Home – November 19, 1944

19441119 missed-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad,

Not much to write about. The going is a little slow so that also makes it hard to find some things to write about. (pardon me while I think of it please send me some olives ) we just had a mail call and one of the Fellows, in his package received some olives, and they are surely good. I also received a package from May Barber. Mail is sure slow here, how is it coming at home now any faster? Did you receive my pictures yet? I have some more to send to you. The one pictures of the Anzio landing.

Did I tell you I had a letter from Eddie Hart. He is in the 3rd army 35th division. He said that Orval Strodle was attached to his outfit. I doubt if I will ever get to see him as he is too far from me. We have been able to see a show now and then move so that helps us to some enjoyment I know this isn’t much of a letter but it’s about the best I can do. Good by to you both & I love you from the bottom of my heart.
The

Your Son,
“Chick”
