December 4, 1944 – Monday

SONY DSCI worked all day and tonight I went to see Margot. Her girl friend was there so I am to go over to her house tomorrow night. We talked a lot about America and other things in general. There was a large air raid and many German planes came over. All the people went to the cellar except Margot and I. We went outside to watch the ack ack. I came home about 9:30 pm.

December 3, 1944 – Sunday

SONY DSCHad a swell time last night. I danced until I was so tired I could hardly move. Their dancing is all together different from our dancing. You twirl more here. I met a nice girl that could speak English and I took her home. I went to mass this morning and met her there again. We walked around for a while and I was to go to her house Monday night. I did a few odd jobs this afternoon and tonight we went to a show at a theater. Some German planes were over tonight.

Letter Home – November 30, 1944

19441130-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad,

Received a letter with the stamps in it, thanks a million. But pretty sure my letters, just as fast Free as they do air mail. Sorry that I have been a little slow in writing the last few days but you know how it is when you’re busy.

Still there is little I can’t write about. I did get to take a good shower. In fact I was so dirty I took to showers. Boy I think I finally got the Anzio dirt off of me. ha ha. They really felt good. We should be getting in the news at home, as our division is doing some good work.

Had a letter from John Collins the other day, he surely thinks a lot of you and dad. He said he wished he could come down Christmas but doesn’t think it can make it. I still have all your letters to answer when I get the time so you can expect a long letter one of these days. By By for now.

Love
Your Son,
“Chick”

SONY DSCWe had to move again this morning out of the room we are in to a new room. It took us most of the day to move. At night I went with Giese and Bill over to some peoples house. They treated us swell and gave us a lot to drink. We had a nice time and came home.

November 28, 1944 – Tuesday

SONY DSCThere was little to do today so Breunig, Zirkel and I went into town. We walked down to the Strasbourg Cathedral and it was simply beautiful. There are quite a few Snipers in town so we didn’t stay long. By the time we got back, the company was all loaded up and was moving out to a new bivouac. We are now in a school house. A pretty nice place.

November 27, 1944 – Monday

SONY DSCThe 7th Infantry went all the way to Strasbourg last night so we are moving in today. Strasbourg is a very beautiful city. On the way our supply truck rammed into the back of another trailer and busted the front end. I went on into Strasbourg. We were at one area but had to move to another. We cleaned our room and set up our supplies. Here again we found cases of beer left behind by the Germans. We had about 10 cases. We went to bed early.

November 26, 1944 – Sunday

SONY DSCWe moved today to a town called Schirmeck. It was a German concentration camp. It was surely filthy. We cleaned it up a little. We found some beer in kegs so now every truck has a keg of beer on it. We are to move tomorrow.
