December 11, 1944 – Monday

SONY DSCNot much doing today. Went over to Margo’s tonight. Her Mother is German and they are taking all Germans and putting them in concentration camps. They were all crying and didn’t want me to stay because they were afraid I would get into trouble. I told them there was nothing to worry about if she had did nothing wrong.

Letter Home – December 10, 1944

19441210-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad

Here it is Sunday and time I should write you both a letter. I had a letter from ‘Gee’ & she said that you have received my pictures. Boy have I ever been sweating those pictures out. I thought I had lost them as I had never heard whether they had arrived home or not. I have about six rolls getting develop now so it won’t be long and I’ll send them home.

I went to mass this morning & Communion also. It surely brings back memories of home to go into a good church and listen to good singing. Funny here, the women sit on one side & the men on the other. Mail is slow coming in now, but the packages seem to be coming in okea. This is all I have to say in now so I’ll say good by.

Lots of love

Your Son
“Chick”

December 9, 1944 – Saturday

SONY DSCKept pretty busy today. Steve Toth and I took my pictures over to “B” Company to be developed. Played a little cards and then went to over to see Margot. Her dad made up a poem about me, but it’s in German and she won’t tell me what it says.

Letter Home – December 8, 1944

19441208a-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad

Boy I have just finished taking a bath in a bathtub. First time I’ve ever been in one of those things since I was home on furlough. Seem funny to climb into a bathtub. I went to mass today as it was a holy day of obligation. It was a beautiful cathedral and I’ll tell you all about it some day when I can.

But times have changed again. This time to the better again. What do you know I have found another girl, ha ha. She’s really swell and also speaks English. It’s more like being home again, but also brings back memories. Her mother makes me bring my laundry over and treats me 19441208b-Lscan-600as a son. Their son is the same age as I, but he is in the German army.

They really treat me swell. Margot is the girl’s name. All us, tell dad that there are a lot of Bruns’s in Hanover, ha, ha. Ha, ha, I told a little fate of the and said that dad came from Hanover, so that’s when they told me of the Bruns’s being there. With all the bombing that’s going on there I doubt if there’s many left. They have told me a lot about Germany & what to watch out for. The people here are funny, they are so full of German propaganda that they are partially afraid of the Americans. It was just luck that I am at this girl, and of course when you’re in the army, you never know when or where you will go next. So they will probably be forgotten like everyone else.

19441208c-Lscan-600You wanted to know how many Christmas packages I have received so far. 17 two day and at the rate they are coming and I’ll probably beat last year’s record of 29

How’s everyone at home, Okea. I’m fine in the best of health. It seems funny that I have been overseas so long, yet it doesn’t feel long to me. I only hope the war is over by this spring so I’ll make it home by next Christmas.

I was going to send you & dad fifty dollars a piece but you know how I am in giving money for presents. I’ll just wait until I can find something to send & if I can I’ll then send you the money.

By by Mom & dad. I’ll surely be thinking of you both Christmas & I’ll say all of my prayers for you at mass. I love you both from the bottom of my heart, and no one could ever take your place.

Your Loving Son
“Chick”

December 8, 1944 – Friday

SONY DSCI went to mass today in the Cathedral in Strasbourg. Boy but it’s a beautiful church. It was built in 1400 AD. The American bombers had bombed it twice but it was still in pretty good shape. There was over 1500 soldiers there and all of us went to communion. Went to the show tonight and then wrote letters.

God, but the streets are dark at night. I carry my gun in one & a flashlight in the other. Some of the fellows have been sniped at, at night.

December 6, 1944 – Wednesday

SONY DSCToday was about the same as yesterday. Tonight I went over to Margot’s house. We had quite a time. She’s beginning to understand and speak English very well. We talked until about 11:00 o’clock before I went home. The gang had raided a warehouse down on the Rhine river. They brought home about 30 cases of wine with 15 bottles to a case.
