January 6, 1945 – Saturday

SONY DSCGermany started in shelling the town this morning. He threw in two shells every 5 minutes. He quit about 8 o’clock and started again at 11 o’clock. Some of them came pretty close. Shrapnel has been flying all around. Wrote some letters. Made out a few requisitions and took a run down to the Battalion. It has been snowing the last two days.

Letter Home – January 1, 1945

19450101-Lscan-600Happy new year Mother & Dad,

Well I wonder what the new year has in store for us. I’m afraid I spoke out of turn when I said that it wasn’t any snow here. Well we now have a blanket of snow, and it’s still cold. It didn’t get a chance to start the new year off by going two a mass. It seems as though we are on the move or something or another win Sunday’s roll around. Also if the fighting is hard and the Germans are still shelling the town we move into, there’s not any one that wants to go to church. I received three more packages today. So that brings by total to 32 packages for Christmas. Not bad. What all did you and dad do to New Year’s Day? Did you eat out? We had Turkey for dinner but I am afraid I didn’t get a very good piece. I got a back and there’s little me on a pack. Well guess I’ll bring this to a close. It’s about my bed time, and as I stayed up two see the new year in I’m a little sleepy. By By

Your Son,
“Chick”

December 31, 1944 – Sunday

SONY DSCWe loaded everything up and left about 11 o’clock. It snowed most of the night and is still snowing out now. We are moving up into the mountains and it’s really cold. The snow gets deeper the higher we go. Some of the large trucks couldn’t make it so they had to stop and put their chains on. We got to the new area and everyone had a house but us so we pitched a tent. I was glad we didn’t as we had a New Years party and what a party. Wow. It’s one I won’t forget for a long time.

December 30, 1944 – Saturday

SONY DSCWe got in our new sleeping bags today so we issued them out. I’ll be darned if we’re not going to move again tomorrow. It sure beats me. We are moving above Colmar and the good old 3rd Division will have the center of the attack again as always. Popped some corn and sat around and talked till bed time.

December 29, 1944 – Friday

SONY DSCWe loaded the other truck with mines and then sat around until we moved. We moved just after dinner. It’s in a Bottle factory. Not much of a bivouac. We got us a room in the basement. Fixed us a light, put in a stove and made a pretty nice home.
