January 21, 1945 – Sunday

SONY DSCI really had a good time there last few days. I was a little sick in my stomach and couldn’t eat. They thought it was the way they prepared their food. They really treated me swell. And for the first time over sea’s I slept in a bed between two white sheets. We left to go back to camp about 9:30 am. It had snowed all day yesterday and last night and the snow was about a foot deep. We caught some good rides, but my feet just about froze again coming home. We got a ride all the way to HQ Co. and them caught a jeep and came back to camp. The company had moved from the last area and are now in a place called Behnenwiel. The Division is getting ready to attack and the village is sure loaded with G.I.’s and equipment. Went to bed early.

Letter Home – January 19, 1945

19450119-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad,

Still the same old thing, nothing to write about and the mail is still coming in slow. I’m getting a pass, but I am unable to go see bud as he is too far away. I’ll tell you all about it when I get back. One of these days I may be close enough to go see bud and Eddie both, but not at the present time. It has been pretty nice this week and the snow is beginning to melt. Been playing a little cards at night. Some nighttime lucky and others I’m not. One night I lost $36.00 without winning a hand. But I always manage to come out ahead at the end of the month. Have a small cold now all but it’s coming along fine. Guess this is all for now so I’ll say good-bye and I love you both very much. Just received a letter from Snook, he’s and Northern France.

Your Son,
“Chick”

SONY DSCWas up at 4 o’clock and left at six for HQ Co. Council and I got out onto the road for Strasbourg at about 9 o’clock. We were down there at 12 noon. I just about froze my feet going down. It was sure cold. Council went to his friends and I went to mine.

Letter Home – January 14, 1945

19450114a-Lscan-600 Dear Mother & Dad,

I have a couple of letters dated Dec 25 and Jan 4th. I wish I knew where the mail is at. Everyone is griping about it. But I guess we are out cast to so that accounts for it. It has stop snowing for a change, but you never know when it will start again. It must be plenty cold at home now. Its cold here but not too bad. You ask if I had received my pockets stove. As yet I haven’t. But it may be a long soon. I have the up pills though.

You tell Russell he was right, Christmas wasn’t much to me. Yes I had a letter from Bud saying he was going to try and visit me, but I am too far from him so maybe someday we 19450114b-Lscan-600may get closer together and then I’ll go see him. I felt kind cheap when you told me that Bernard gave you some money for Christmas, but you know me mom & dad. Money isn’t a gift. I was going to send you both a hundred dollars but instead I put it in soldiers deposit. When I am able to find a gift for you, I’ll send it. You both know that I think the world of you. Someday I’ll be able to make it up to you.

I have some clippings that im want put in my scrap book, and I’ll bring this letter to a close. I wish I could write a decent letter but I just can’t get in the mood. By By & I love you both from the bottom of my heart.

Your Son,
“Chick”

SONY DSCI was sick in my stomach last night. Didn’t feel good all day today. Went to the battalion and it was sure some ride. They have moved way back now, so that they will be back far enough if and when Germany counter attacks. Wrote home, and played some cards.
