April 8, 1945 – Sunday

A4P66-3-600Layed around all morning. They told us to get ready as the trucks were coming to pick us up. I went to mass at 2 o’clock and the trucks finally came about 6:30 pm. We loaded and left for the QM area. Got in about 12 o’clock and I went to sleep on some boards with one blanket wrapped around me.

Letter Home – April 5, 1945

19450405-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad;

Just a line to let you know I’m Okea and still trying to get back to the company. This makes the 3rd repo depot that I have been too, but I guess it will be the last one until I go back to the division depot. If I don’t get out soon I’m going to see if I can’t get out and hitch hike back. These repo depots drive a man crazy. As you can see by the top of the letter I’m in Germany. So far I haven’t much to say for it as there is nothing left of the cities. The bombers have certainly ruined them. I entered Germany at about 9:00 o’clock at night and crossed the Rhine river at one o’clock. We had a miserable ride. We did not have a top on our truck, and we had a long ride. It rained part of the way, and most of us had our raincoats in the bottom of our barracks bag. Boy what a night we spent. We got to one depot and they were full up so we had to go on to another one. We got there about 4:30 AM & and had to pitch tents. Well so long for now I’ll write you soon.

Your Son,
“Chick”

We had to pitch pup tents and me and Jr. with out any shelter halves. We slept till 7 am got up and ate breakfast. Layed around all day and were on guard from 6:00 until 10:00 pm. Went to bed.

April 3, 1945 – Tuesday

SONY DSCWas put on the alert to leave tonight after chow. We left at 8:00 for the 71st Repo Depot. We rode in an open truck without any top. It rained on us and our raincoats were in the bottom of our bags. It was cold and miserable. I entered Germany at about 9:00 pm. Passed the first line of Seigfried defense. The Dragons teeth were about 8 to 10 feet high. Plenty of pill boxes. We got to the new area at 11 pm. But they were full up and we had to go on to another company.

Letter Home – April 1, 1945

19450401-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad;

Well I my my way back to the company, but these Repo depots are going to drive me crazy. I don’t know how long it’s going to take me to get back, as the front is moving fairly fast and they can’t get in touch with the division. I’ll let you know from time to time. Don’t expect too many letters as I’m not writing to any one. — well today is Easter Sunday. Boy I’ll never for get this day. I didn’t think I was going to get to go mass today, but at the depot I’m at now I just got in and mass was going on so I went. I really had an Easter dinner, ha, ha. We were riding on a dusty road, I had a “K” rations to eat, which consisted of a piece of cheese and a cracker. For supper I had a spoonful of hash & a cup of coffee. Great Eh. Boy but I’ll be glad to get back to the company. I haven’t had any mail since I left for the hospital. Oh well I had a good time while I was at the hospital anyway. I hope you can read this as I’m writing in on my knee. Goodbye and I love you both very much. I’ll write again soon.

Your Son,
“Chick”
