Letter Home – April 17, 1945

19450417a-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad;

A guess that takes care of you all for the present. I know you have all been worrying about me, as the mail has not been coming your way. All I can say is I’m sorry. But the way this rat race is going I won’t have time for many letters so tell everyone hello for me, and I’m in the best of health.

I have been back for a couple of weeks now and we have been moving ahead every day. We get little rest. Now I have more worries. I am now acting supply Sargent and truck driver too. The supply Sargent went home so now I’m boss. It will be sometime before I’ll get home now but 19450417b-Lscan-600like I have said before the longer I stay over here the less chance I have of going to the Pacific. Boy is the division ever bagging the prisoners now! They put up little resistance so it shouldn’t last more than a couple of more months.

Being as I have little time I’ll bring this to a close. I know it isn’t much but it will relieve your minds a little that I’m okea. I’ll answer all of your letters soon, and lord knows I have a lot of them. Packages & letters were really stacked up and waiting for me when I got back. I must have had eight packages & fifty letters or more. I’ll answer them as soon as I can, but just have patience and don’t worry. I’ll get a letter home again soon. By by and your never out of my mind.

Your Son,
“Chick”

April 17, 1945 – Tuesday

A4P69-6-600Went back after the other load this morning with the extra truck that had come back from the QM. Now things should go better. We were back only to find out that we were leaving after dinner. We moved out into the field this time. Germany was over strafing the roads again.

April 16, 1945 – Monday

A4P70-3-600We were up at about 5 am and as the lady of the house didn’t have enough eggs we took some sugar and went trading for eggs. We got enough so that eight of us had 4 eggs a piece. We then left for the bivouac area. As usual as soon as we were pulling in they were pulling out. So we went along. They crossed the river and moved into a new bivouac area. We didn’t stay long though and we were on our way again. We moved into Erlangen this time and there was still street fighting going on ahead of us. I wrote a letter home, first one since I have been back.

April 15, 1945 – Sunday

A4P69-4-600Went back to pick up the other load. By the time I got back we were ready to move again. So away we went. We moved about 25 miles this time so by the time I got back after the other load and got loaded up it was dark. We started to stop and sleep in one town but some SS troops had slipped back in and the people told us about them so we moved on to another town. They had hot water so I washed up a little. They gave us some warm milk and we went to bed.

April 14, 1945 – Saturday

A4P65-5-600They took a truck away from us this morning so that means I’ll have to shuttle my loads. I left Supply and Pryz behind and we took off for a new area, unloaded and came back after the other load. After supper we moved on again. Just don’t stop long enough to catch our breath . I’m dirty and unshaven.

April 13, 1945 – Friday

A4P67-3-600We stayed in this area all day. Dago started the generator and we listened to the radio. We left after supper. We are heading toward Bamberg. We set up our tent and went to sleep. Germany was over bombing and strafing all night. He came pretty close to us a few times.

April 12, 1945 – Thursday

A4P67-5-600We left for a new area right after breakfast. It seems as though we are always on the move. Left again after supper and I had to drive black out again. It rained most of the way.

April 11, 1945 – Wednesday

A4P66-6-600Nothing to do all day today as we are going to move. We were supposed to move out right after dinner, but we haven’t moved yet! Wellman was told he was going home. He was on his way within a half hour. That leaves me Supply Sargent now. Also I drive my own truck. We moved after supper and I had to drive black out. They are now attacking Schweinfurt. We got to our bivouac at about 1 am.

SONY DSCDid a little work today. Talked to an Australian that had been a prisoner for over 4 years. He said he wasn’t treated too badly. We had a PX. Not much but it helped things out a little.

April 9, 1945 – Monday

A4P66-1-600Caught the ration truck this morning and started out to find the company. “A” Company was on the move so I didn’t catch up with them till about 7 o’clock. We sat around and talked a while and then went to bed.
