Charles F. Bruns lived in the East Central Illinois town of Champaign. A local athlete, ‘Chick’ joined the Army in 1941. In October of 1942 he was sent to the European Theater. During his tour he was able to keep is daily thoughts in a journal that is presented here. Additionally, photos, letters written to home, news paper articles, and historic references will be shared.

July 31, 1945 – Tuesday

A4P108-1-600Spent a rough night as we have no sleeping quarters. The seats are as hard as a rock, and it was pretty chilly. We played a little cards during the day to pass the time away. We ate twice during the day.

July 30, 1945 – Monday

A4P112-7-600Played some cards. Took a shower. Turned in our excess clothes. Had a PX. Got ready to leave. We left at 7:30 pm and walked a couple of miles to the train. The train pulled out a 8:50 pm. Headed for Marseilles.

July 28, 1945 – Saturday

SONY DSCSlept all morning as it was cold and damp. Went for a small hike and played some cards. Went to a show in the afternoon. Drank some beer and coke in the evening.

July 27, 1945 – Friday

A4P110-5-600Went out for a walk this morning. Played cards till noon. They say we are leaving Monday. Played ping pong till supper time and went to a show. Talked till bed time.

July 26, 1945 – Thursday

A4P107-1-600Went out and played a ball game this morning. Laid in the sun all afternoon. Took a bath and went to the show. Went over and had a beer. It started to rain so we had to fasten our tent down. It didn’t rain hard.

July 25, 1945 – Wednesday

A4P113-2-600Laid around all morning, cut a little grass. Took a sun bath. Ate dinner. Laid in the sun again in the afternoon. Played cards and went to a show in the evening.

A4P108-4-600Layed around all morning. Got a little sun before dinner and after dinner. They had a U.S.O. show for us so I spent the afternoon there. Went to the show in the evening and then walked down to the brew hall.

A4P109-1-600Slept all morning. Layed out in the sun in the afternoon. Played a little cards and went to the show in the evening. Then played more cards till bed time.

A4P110-4-600Went to mass this morning, first time in quite a while. Went to the show in the afternoon and went over for coffee and doughnuts in the evening. Came back and sat around and talked till bed time.
