Letter Home – October 28, 1943

19431028-Lscan-600Dear Mother & Dad,
I know you have been sweating out a letter from me but mail all from here is very slow, so you will have to except it. I am fine but the damned old rains have set in here and make things a little more miserable. We have a good tent to sleep and so maybe that will relieve your minds that I stay out of the dampness. I also sleep on a cot that I picked up so I am off the ground. I don’t believe I ever told you that I saw Mt. Vesuvius. It’s just a high mountain that reaches to a high peak and you can see the smoke coming out of it. It’s a volcano just like mount Etna in Sicily. At night you can see fire shooting out of it. It was foggy the most of the time I was near in so I couldn’t get a picture of it. I would have loved to have seen Naples but my truck wasn’t so good. I hear it is very beautiful city. I have been pretty lucky so far on seeing large cities so maybe it is catching up with me. Goodbye for now and I’ll write more later.
Your Son
“Chick”
