Jan 1, 1943 – Friday

Today starts a new year. Happy New Year everyone. We are having mass right here in our own area now at 9:30am so I went to mass. Headquarters Platoon is going to play the first platoon a softball game. We practiced a little while in the morning and then ate dinner. We had a good dinner. We had turkey today and all the trimmings, with wine to drink. In the afternoon we had our ball game. I bet Willy Hood $5.00 on the game and for a while I thought I had lost it. I hit a home run with two guys on base in the fourth inning to put us ahead 3 to 0 but in the last of the sixth, I walked 3 fellows and then with two outs a fellow gets on, on an error and then another gets a 2 base hit and they go ahead 4 to 3. But with bases full in the first of the 7th, Wellman comes to the rescue and gets a hit that put us ahead. That started it. When the game ended we won 12 to 4. Olson and I again took Badali and Wellman in cribbage.
